Riverboat Excursion

Wanganui is very fortunate to have two of the most unique working examples of New Zealand's maritime history. The PS Waimarie and the MV Wairua regularly naviagate the lower Whanganui River taking trips to Upokongaro and Hipango Park. With over 100 years of history on the Whanganui River the boats are based at the Whanganui Riverboat Centre.

Each day at 2pm during the summer the Waimarie takes a trip up the Whanganui River. On Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays she has a stopover at Upokongaro. The cruises on these days are 3 hours long. The cost of a return trip on the Waimarie is: Adults $40 - Children 5-15 years $14 - Under 5 Free. During the winter the PS Waimarie sails at 1pm Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays and School Holidays.

Wanganui Heritage Coachlines offer a great add-on to your riverboat experience.

Our tour will take you in our heritage bus for either the upward leg or downward leg of the journey. You will travel up Durie Hill for great city views including looking down on the Riverboat Centre, out through Okuia and back onto the highway running alongside the Whanganui River. We will also stop along the way for you to photograph the Waimarie as she steams along.
